Who We Are
Socrates Greek School is a Not-For-Profit independently operated Greek school which offers Greek Heritage Language programs in Vancouver and the lower mainland since 1975. Since its inception, Socrates Greek School has been operated by the parents and guardians of the students who volunteer their time to provide the best possible education for our students.
OUR CURRICULUM
Oral Language Proficiency
Through a focus on the formation of the sounds of the unique alphabet of the greek language, we focus on our students greek pronunciation so that they can increase their vocabulary and expand their knowledge of the Greek.
CULTURE
Through dance, music, food and our rich history from ancient times to modern, we teach our students about the Greek experience - an experience of which it's influence is felt today in our music, art, and political/democratic structures.
Classroom Learning
Through our two locations we service much of the lower mainland, our students are able to share in their Canadian/Greek experience and socialize in a safe environment meant to foster strong relationships and a common identity. (Please note that this has been temporarily suspended due to the current COVID 19 outbreak)
Online Program
Online learning is available. Our curriculum has adapted to the needs of our students and we offer online education services. These small classes allow for a safe and fun learning environment with teacher guided lessons.
Community Building and Public Speaking
During the school year, your child will be encouraged to join the school for performances at various Greek celebrations. This will allow them to showcase the dances they have learned and connect with the Greek Community at large. In addition to this, there will also be assemblies so that your child can demonstrate their language skills and connection to the Greek culture.

Γεννήθηκα στην Ελλάδα του Βόλου, που ζει ακόμα η οικογένειά μου. Αποφοίτησα από το 2ο Γυμνάσιο Νέας Ιωνίας στο Βόλο το 2014. Μετά από αυτό, σπούδασα 4 χρόνια Προσχολικής Εκπαίδευσης στο Πανεπιστήμιο Θεσσαλίας του Βόλου και αποφοίτησα το 2018. Έχω πιστοποιητικό Νοηματικής Γλώσσας στα Ελληνικά και πιστοποιητικό Επάρκειας Αγγλικής Γλώσσας από το Πανεπιστήμιο του Cambridge και του Michigan. Μαζί με αυτό, έχω ένα πιστοποιητικό γαλλικής γλώσσας Delf A1/ Delf A2. Επιπλέον, είμαι πιστοποιημένος με τις Πρώτες Βοήθειες Φροντίδας Παιδιών Έκτακτης Ανάγκης / CPR / AED Επίπεδο Β. Στο Βόλο εργάστηκα ως ιδιωτικός δάσκαλος από τον Σεπτέμβριο του 2015 έως τον Μάιο του 2017 για παιδιά της Τάξης 1 έως το Γυμνάσιο. Μετακόμισα στον Καναδά, όπως ήθελα να δω κάτι διαφορετικό και να έχουν μια νέα εμπειρία της ζωής στην όμορφη πόλη του Βανκούβερ. Τα τελευταία δύο χρόνια, από τον Σεπτέμβριο του 2018, εργάζομαι για το Socrates Greek School ως δασκάλα. Πάντα ήξερα ότι ήθελα να γίνω δασκάλα, ακόμα και όταν ήμουν νέα. Πάντα μου άρεσε να βοηθάω τους άλλους να μαθαίνουν και να μεγαλώνουν. Το να δουλεύω για τη Σχολή Σωκράτης και να διαδώσω την αγάπη μου για την ελληνική γλώσσα και τον ελληνικό πολιτισμό μέσα από τις ελληνικές οικογένειες και τα παιδιά τους, με επιτρέπει να μοιραστώ το πάθος μου για μάθηση με εσάς και τις οικογένειές σας.
I was born in Greece, Volos where my family still lives. I graduated from the 2nd High School of Nea Ionia in Volos in 2014. After that, I studied 4 years Early Childhood Education at the University of Thessaly in Volos and graduated in 2018. I have a certificate in Sign Language in Greek and a certificate of Proficiency in English Language from the University of Cambridge and Michigan. Together with that, I have a certificate of French Language Delf A1/ Delf A2. Additionally, I am certified with the Emergency Child Care First Aid / CPR/ AED Level B.
In Volos, I worked as a private tutor from September 2015 until May of 2017 for children in Grade 1 to High School. I moved to Canada as I wanted to see something different and have a new experience of living in the beautiful city of Vancouver. For the last two years, since September 2018, I have been working for Socrates Greek School as a teacher.
I always knew I wanted to be a teacher, even when I was young . I always enjoyed helping others learn and grow. Working for Socrates School, and spreading my love for the Greek language and culture through the Greek families and their children, allows me to share my passion for learning with you and your families.
Sophia Roumeliotis
I am excited to work with your children this year, and look forward to continue learning how to best support your children with learning the Greek language. I have included a little bit about myself, my work experience, and my future goals. I graduated from SFU in 2001 with a Bachelor degree in Human Geography and a Certificate in Urban Studies. After graduating from SFU, I worked as a Front Desk Receptionist and Regional Administrative Assistant for Manulife Financial. I also worked as a Underwriter Assistant for ING Insurance for one year. I later decided to pursue my education and become an Information Records Specialist working for an engineering company called Fluor Canada. I really enjoyed working for Fluor for three years; however, my life took a turn in 2008, when I became a mother of twins. Due to my dedication to my children, I decided to resign from my position to become a full-time mother.
Throughout the years, I have worked part time for Socrates as a substitute teacher in Surrey and Vancouver. Having young children of my own, and being around many family members that are teachers including my husband, has given me a basic understanding of how to communicate positively with children and care for them. Learning a secondary language has always been important to me and teaching for Socrates has given me the opportunity to help children understand the Greek language and culture. As a former graduate of Socrates Greek School, I have learned the importance of maintaining the cultural connection. It is this connection that brings to life stories and traditions that will allow children to carry with them for life. My future goals are to continue working with children and families and promote the Greek language and heritage, while working for a school that I believe has always supported our Greek identity.
Είμαι ενθουσιασμένος που συνεργάζομαι με τα παιδιά σας φέτος και ανυπομονώ να συνεχίσω να μαθαίνω πώς να στηρίζω καλύτερα τα παιδιά σας με την εκμάθηση της ελληνικής γλώσσας. Θα συμπεριλάβω λίγο για τον εαυτό μου, την εργασιακή μου εμπειρία και τους μελλοντικούς μου στόχους. Αποφοίτησα από το SFU το 2001 με πτυχίο Ανθρώπινης Γεωγραφίας και πτυχίο αστικών σπουδών. Μετά την αποφοίτησή μου από το SFU, δούλευα ως ρεσεψιονίστ και σαν περιφερειακός διοικητικός βοηθός για το Manulife Financial. Εργάστηκα επίσης ως βοηθός ανάδοχου για την ING Insurance για ένα χρόνο. Αργότερα αποφάσισα να συνεχίσω την εκπαίδευσή μου και να γίνω Ειδικός Πληροφοριακών Αρχείων και εργάστηκα για μια εταιρεία μηχανικών που ονομάζεται Fluor Canada. Μου άρεσε πολύ να δουλεύω για το Fluor για τρία χρόνια. Ωστόσο, η ζωή μου πήρε μια σειρά το 2008, όταν έγινα μητέρα των διδύμων. Λόγω της αφοσίωσής μου στα παιδιά μου, αποφάσισα να παραιτηθώ από τη θέση μου.
Κατά τη διάρκεια των ετών, έχω εργαστεί για τον Σωκράτη ως αναπληρωτής δάσκαλος στο Surrey και στο Βανκούβερ. Έχοντας τα δικά μου μικρά παιδιά, και επειδή είμαι γύρω από πολλά μέλη της οικογένειας που είναι δάσκαλοι, συμπεριλαμβανομένου του συζύγου μου, έχω αποκτήσει μια βασική κατανόηση του πώς να επικοινωνώ θετικά με τα παιδιά και να τα φροντίζω. Η εκμάθηση μιας δευτερης γλώσσας ήταν πάντα σημαντική για μένα και η διδασκαλία για τον Σωκράτη μου έδωσε την ευκαιρία να βοηθήσω τα παιδιά να κατανοήσουν την ελληνική γλώσσα και τον πολιτισμό. Ως πρώην απόφοιτος του Ελληνικού Σχολείου Σωκράτης, έμαθα τη σημασία της διατήρησης της πολιτιστικής σύνδεσης. Αυτή η σύνδεση φέρνει στη ζωή ιστορίες και παραδόσεις που θα επιτρέψουν στα παιδιά να συνεχίσουν τη ζωή τους. Οι μελλοντικοί μου στόχοι είναι να συνεχίσω να εργάζομαι με παιδιά και οικογένειες, να προωθώ την ελληνική γλώσσα και κληρονομιά, και εργάζομαι για ένα σχολείο που πιστεύω ότι υποστήριζε πάντα την ελληνική μας ταυτότητα.
